Ultrasonic Antifouling

In the past few years a new technology has become available to prevent the growth of marine organisms on the bottom of boats that will hopefully replace toxic bottom paints forever.

Ultrasonic antifouling creates sophisticated digital signals that are transmitted through the hull and are extremely hostile to algae. If the algae don’t grow, mussels and barnacles have no food source and do not attach to the boat. The weakness of the system is that some parts of the hull — keels of all kinds, fins and rudders, and areas that are heavily reinforced — don’t resonate very well, so there will be some growth. With a slick or hard coating and a an occasional dive scrub or pressure wash, we believe this system will work well as permanent antifouling.

The system consists of a processor or generator, housed in a small plastic box mounted in a dry location, and one or more transducers, 3” round PVC pucks, which are attached to the inside of the hull. Most boats in the 30-50 foot range will require a two-transducer system that costs under $2000 installed. The system uses about 2 Amps of 12V DC power and can be connected directly to the AC or DC system.

We are currently experimenting with a variety of bottom coatings, looking for the best value in a permanent antifouling system. If you’re interested in becoming part of this experiment, please don’t hesitate to call us. One way or another we will guarantee that your boat bottom will stay clean, and you’ll pay less over the long haul than with biocide paints.

This is our boat, a few weeks after we installed ultrasonic antifouling. Before the installation, the whole hull was covered in the dark algae; the lighter areas are where the signals dislodged the growth. The light area on the rudder was where the prop wash hit it hardest; we have subsequently found that while the rudder gets quite dirty, it comes back clean after we take the boat out for a spin.
